Joe finished Lava Java in two painting sessions lasting about fifty minutes. Joe mixed coffee beans, Elmer’s Glue-All, and purple or blue tempera paint and poured the mixtures onto the canvas with the help of his collaborator, spreading the mix with a brush.

With the help of his collaborator Joe then mixed coffee grounds, Elmer’s Glue-All, and red or orange tempera paint and scooped them onto the canvas. He used a wooden spoon to spread that mix. At the next session Joe squeezed an orange coffee grounds mixture from a plastic bottle around the edges of the painting as his collaborator moved the canvas.

He then used a brush to smooth the mix and smear color streaks over the beans. Joe stayed focused, but once stepped aside to make knee bends before continuing.
