Tom used a dripping paint platform to complete Drip Painting No. 5 in one session lasting an hour and a half. He had two button switches attached to his tray. The first was connected to a rotating turntable and cassette player with music. Each time he activated this switch music played for sixty seconds and the table top rotated for a complete revolution and then stopped.

The second switch turned on a small fan facing the path of the falling paint drops for sixty seconds each time it was activated. Six bottles with different colors of tempera and sugar paint mixtures dripped onto the canvas resting on the turntable below. The colors included yellow-white, deep purple, yellow-orange, medium purple and burnt sienna.

The color choices, the pace of the falling drops, and the locations of the paint bottles were determined by Tom’s collaborator. Tom used the turntable switch twice as often as the fan switch.
