Wendy created an orange background for her contribution to the collaborative painting Splat! She started with a fresh canvas and a plastic container of yellowish brown tempera paint mixed with sugar. Using a one inch brush Wendy completely covered the surface with repetitive strokes until she needed more paint. Some orange sugar paint was added to her container and she repeated the process filling the canvas with so much paint that some flowed over the sides. Wendy spent an afternoon continually brushing and stroking the sugar paint on the canvas.

Phillip used a drip painting platform for his contribution to the collaborative painting Splat! He sat next to a red button switch connected to a rotating turntable and cassette player cued up with music by Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson. Each time he activated his switch music played for sixty seconds and a table top supporting the canvas rotated for a complete revolution and then stopped.

Tempera paint mixed with sugar dripped from plastic bottles onto the canvas prepared by Wendy below, with the color choices and the locations of the bottles determined by Phillip’s collaborator. Phillip was coached by several staff members to hit his switch, which he did on occasion. He seemed to enjoy the music and the painting session which lasted almost an hour.
