Virginia thoroughly enjoys rubbing together and shaking any one of her several sets of maracas. She used a special pair of modified plastic maracas, with several holes, to complete Shake and Drip in about eight sessions.

At each session a different color of tempera paint mixed with sugar was poured through the largest hole in the top of one, or both, maracas. As disco music played in the background, Virginia softly rubbed her maracas against each other, and then banged them onto the canvas spilling a large volume of paint near the top edge.

Her collaborator then let the paint set for about thirty minutes before elevating the canvas to allow the paint to drip from top to bottom. After the third session the entire canvas was painted with black tempera paint by her collaborator to add more texture for the layers of paint added in the next five sessions.
