Virginia thoroughly enjoys rubbing together and shaking any one of her several sets of maracas. She used a special pair of modified plastic maracas, with several holes, to complete Shake and Paint III in about a dozen sessions.

At each session a different color of tempera paint mixed with sugar was poured through the largest hole in the top of one maraca. As disco music played in the background, Virginia softly rubbed her paint filled maraca against the other maraca, or shook them both aggressively when the beat picked up.

Her collaborator quickly repositioned the canvas from time to time during each thirty minute session as Virginia continued to shake and paint. The paint leaving the maracas dotted or streaked the canvas, also dripping onto Virginia’s hands, and occasionally her face.
