Doug finished Batthwey in two fifteen minute painting sessions. At his first session Doug was offered four plastic squirt bottles containing tempera paint mixed with sugar: red, yellow, blue, and white.

He poured blue, red, and then yellow sugar paint onto the canvas and then chose a large one inch brush to spread and blend the mixtures. He eventually added some white sugar paint and then more red, finally ending up with a reddish monotone color covering the complete canvas including the edges.

At the next session Doug painted from plastic bowls containing acrylic paint using a much smaller brush blending broad sweeps and then adding detailed strokes or tapping dabs of red, yellow, white and blue. Doug enjoyed his painting sessions stopping to smile at the camera when photos were taken of his progress.
