Scott finished Red Background Elaborated in three sessions. At the first session Scott’s collaborator spooned brown, burnt sienna, and red tempera paint mixed with instant food thickener onto the canvas.

Scott jammed his sponge brush down onto the surface sometimes spreading the paint. At other times when he extended his arm into the air his collaborator would slide the canvas under the brush helping Scott to sweep the entire surface with lengthier strokes. At the second session white tempera paint mixed with sugar was stroked onto the canvas in random swipes by Scott.

At a third session Scott covered the entire painting with instant pudding mixed with flour and brown or orange acrylic paint. Scott’s collaborator then squeezed some dabs of white acrylic paint onto the wet surface for him to spread with his brush.
