David completed Swish Swash in three sessions. In the first five minute session, surplus sugar paint was dumped by David onto a blank canvas covering the surface by rotating the canvas with both hands. The canvas was then placed in a vertical position for the paint to flow off as it dried.

In the second twenty minute session David added four colors of sugar and tempera paint mixtures onto the canvas: white, yellow, orange, and red. Using plastic squirt bottles he poured the mixtures in random order over most of the canvas. Then using a medium sized brush David spread the sugar paint blending the colors.

In the third twenty minute session David used a smaller brush to dab various colors of acrylic paint from paper plates randomly onto the canvas with small strokes. A playful interaction between David and his collaborator soon ensued to get David to apply broader sweeping strokes of acrylic paint.
