| Greg finished Black in one forty five minute painting session. His collaborator helped him mix six batches of sugar paint by combining raw sugar cane crystals with six colors of tempera paint: black, magenta, light yellow, purple, blue, and red. |

| Using a medium sized brush and broad strokes he added one color at a time to his canvas choosing not to blend more than adjacent areas. After covering about one fourth of the canvas with black, Greg dipped his brush into the red sugar paint and painted next to the black. |

| His collaborator helped him to re-position his canvas, and then Greg stroked some purple and light yellow onto other areas. He added some blue and then ended with strokes of magenta in the last empty area. |
